Zeppelin watches commemorate the achievements of Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin, founder of the World’s First Airline.
The designs pay tribute to the German Count who pioneered rigid airship development. He had encountered Union Army balloons during the American Civil War in 1863 where he had been sent as an observer. He was convinced of the potential importance of aviation and began development of airships.
A Zeppelin, or rigid airship works by using a large volume of gas that is lighter than air to help lift it off the ground. Zeppelins were filled with hydrogen or helium and could lift many tons at a time when airplanes could barely lift themselves.
Zeppelins were different from blimps as they had rigid metal or wood frames inside that allowed large engines and passenger compartments to be outfitted. They had a great deal of living space inside the actual cigar shape. Some Zeppelins could reach speeds of up to 100 km per hour.
Zeppelin’s Design was patented in 1895 and in 1909.Count Zeppelin founded the world’s first airline. First flown commercially in 1910, the new airline had carried over 10,000 fare-paying passengers on over 1500 mainly sightseeing flights by mid 1914. So outstanding was the design that all airships became known as Zeppelins.
In 1930 the Graf Zeppelin undertook trips around Europe. It was then decided to open the first regular transatlantic airship line. Services were operated from Germany to North America and Brazil.
We salute a true pioneer of Aviation and commemorate the World’s First Airline.
Delight in the ownership of a Zeppelin timepiece. Innovative designs feature a sense of Freedom and Style in the true tradition of Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin.
