Zeppelin Timepieces

Zeppelin watches commemorate the achievements of Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin, founder of the World’s First Airline.

The designs pay tribute to the German Count who pioneered rigid airship development.  He had encountered Union Army balloons during the American Civil War in 1863 where he had been sent as an observer. He was convinced of the potential importance of aviation and began development of airships.

A Zeppelin, or rigid airship works by using a large volume of gas that is lighter than air to help lift it off the ground. Zeppelins were filled with hydrogen or helium and could lift many tons at a time when airplanes could barely lift themselves.

Zeppelins were different from blimps as they had rigid metal or wood frames inside that allowed large engines and passenger compartments to be outfitted. They had a great deal of living space inside the actual cigar shape. Some Zeppelins could reach speeds of up to 100 km per hour.

Zeppelin’s Design was patented in 1895 and in 1909.Count Zeppelin founded the world’s first airline. First flown commercially in 1910, the new airline had carried over 10,000 fare-paying passengers on over 1500 mainly sightseeing flights by mid 1914. So outstanding was the design that all airships became known as Zeppelins.

In 1930 the Graf Zeppelin undertook trips around Europe. It was then decided to open the first regular transatlantic airship line. Services were operated from Germany to North America and Brazil.

We salute a true pioneer of Aviation and commemorate the World’s First Airline.
Delight in the ownership of a Zeppelin timepiece. Innovative designs feature a sense of Freedom and Style in the true tradition of Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin.

JUNKERS TIMEPIECES

Junkers – What’s in a Name?

Junkers (pronounced Younkers) were first known in Europe as members of the landed nobility with large landholdings and significant political influence.

Junkers Aircraft.
Hugo Junkers was a German engineer and aircraft designer who pioneered the design of all-metal airplanes. He was one of the mainstays of the aircraft industry between World War l and World War ll .
His all-metal passenger and freight planes helped establish airlines in Germany and throughout the world.
Junkers was a socialist and a pacifist. His political views eventually caused conflict with German leadership.
He died in 1935 while under house arrest during negotiations to cede remaining stock and interests in Junkers.

Today Junkers is well known in Europe as one of Germany’s most popular watches.
Distinctive in their appearance, every model has some connection to aircraft designed by Hugo Junkers in the early age of aviation.  For example the JU 52 models have corrugated dials reminiscent of the corrugated metal sheets used on the JU 52 airplane.

Fortis: Cosmonauts, Swiss Watches and Solar Time

Why are cosmonauts issued with a mechanical wrist watch?

Space and time are intrinsically linked so is it surprising that cosmonauts wear an official B-42 Fortis Chronograph Watch!
While at the Watch Fair in Basel Switzerland, we thought we would take a look at the Fortis factory to see what all the fuss was about. The first surprising thing is that it is still located in the same building, in the Swiss town of Grenchen. where Walter Vogt founded the company in 1912, two years before the First
World War. The place exudes history and craftsmanship.
We watched an alarm chronograph being painstakingly assembled, with over two hundred additional components for the intricate alarm function. Design, testing, quality control and the love of creating an individual timepiece, it was all on display.
The history of this innovative brand is quite amazing, here a few highlights.:

1926 - Production of the world.s first self-winding watch, the legendary HARWOOD.

1937 - 25th Anniversary. First Fortis chronograph.

1943 - First Fortis water-resistant automatic wrist watch.

1987 - 75th Anniversary, Fortis again sets the trend with its Flieger Automatic collection

1994 - FORTIS OFFICIAL COSMONAUT chosen as part of the official cosmonaut equipment.

1997 -  Again chosen for Cosmonauts this time for the German-Russian space mission MIR97.

1998 - The world.s first Automatic Chronograph with an integrated mechanical alarm.

2004-  Winner of the First European Aviation Watch award: FORTIS FLIEGER CHRONOGRAPH

2011 - To planet Mars with FORTIS,a simulated space mission to Mars.

2012 - 100 YEARS of FORTIS Watchmaking.

At the Watch Fair, we were blown away by the enormous effort and resources invested in the watch industry by over one hundred brands represented. We couldn’t help but marvel at the amazing achievements made by the wonderfully innovative Fortis watch company.
Watches make a statement about those who make them and those who choose to wear them.

FORTIS is the one I want!
